Where do you think most people from Budapest move to? The answer is quite easy; next to it. Most people who move out from the capital choose its agglomeration, as some of the people who come from the countryside to work in Budapest do so as well, Hvg reports.
The most popular destinations are Érd, Szigetszentmiklós, Gyömrő, Veresegyház and Göd.
The primary reason for this, of course, is that real estate prices are more favourable in Budapest’s agglomeration than they are in the capital. Last year the cost of brick flats in the most expensive downtown districts exceeded 800,000 Forints/m2 (~2400 €/m2), while in the most expensive towns of the agglomeration it was 600,000 Forints/m2 (~1800 €/m2). Additionally, many cities of the agglomeration can be easily accessed by public transportation.
According to Otthon Centrum’s most recent data, except for two of the 80 towns of Budapest’s agglomeration, more people have moved into each of municipalities than they have left. The two towns where more people moved out from are Gödöllő and Százhalombatta.
We have some other interesting and some unfortunate statistics about Hungary:
- Hungary’s latest drug statistics are not promising
- Gaming revenue statistics and surveys of Hungary 2018-2019
- Hungary’s road safety statistics still below the EU average
Gábor Soóki-Tóth, a senior analyst at Otthon Centrum, said that still more than 20,000 people settled in Budapest, in districts XI. and XIII., and although the rate of people moving out from the capital is high, these districts still saw a slight increase in the number of their residents. “In most districts of Budapest, there has been a strong tendency of emigration. According to the scale of inland migration considering Budapest’s district and the towns of its agglomeration, nine out of the last ten places where the most people moved out from are districts of Budapest, the Hungarian capital.”
According to their calculations, as many as 10-20,000 people emigrated from the largest Budapest districts between 2016 and 2018. While the number of people who moved in there was also relatively high, the city’s outer areas were worse off; their population decreased by 1000-1500 people due to inland migration.
