Former Hungarian defence minister: Ukrainians are fighting heroically

"Ukrainians are fighting heroically but the two countries are not in the same weight-class", the former Hungarian defence minister said. #warinukraine

“It is important for Hungary to strengthen Christian values and set an example to a decaying West,” István Simicskó, parliamentary group leader of the co-ruling Christian Democrats, said in connection with contested plans to add a cross to the pedestal of Budapest’s landmark second world war Liberation Monument on Gellert Hill, now being refurbished.

Speaking on public television M1 on Friday, Simicskó said “all civilisations are built on a basis of religion and once that foundation is destroyed the structure will collapse”. “Christian symbols must be revered, still, in Western Europe Christianity is waning and churches are being destroyed,” he added.

Simicskó said the planned crucifix was “also a symbol of freedom and victory”, adding that Byzantine emperors “used to erect crucifixes after battles won”.

In another interview, to public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió, Simicskó called for an early ceasefire and peace talks in the Russia-Ukraine war. He called for talks with Ukraine, Russia, the US and China, and insisted that “this is a proxy war in which players in the background are also important, not just the directly warring parties”.

Concerning the recent incursion by Ukrainian troops into Russian territory, Simicskó said “Ukrainians are fighting heroically but the two countries are not in the same weight-class and this [incursion] will not be a problem for the Russian army.”

  1. A “Not a problem” for which Mr. Putin ordered the evacuation of over a hundred thousand Russian citizens – with no end in sight.

Interesting interpretation of a walk in the park, which this “special operation” is definitely not a good example of.

  2. Fidesz’ use of the term “proxy war” is a misleading propaganda tool to subtly imply a degree of blame on the US and “the West” for a war which is purely a Russian war of imperialist aggression against Ukraine. Fidesz works for Russia and that is why you never see them directly blame Putin and Russia for invading Ukraine and committing continuous acts of atrocity against the Ukrainian people. Orban hates the West and you see Fidesz politicians refer to the “decay” of the West as if Stalinist Russia and Communist China are better examples for us to follow. Fidesz is the rot in Hungary that is bringing the “decay” of the nation with its’ subversion of democracy, its’ submission to Russian control and its’ promotion of widespread corruption and mafia business..

  3. Larry is, as usual, wrong.

The conflict in Ukraine IS now a proxy war, even if it didn’t begin as one. The West ordered Ukraine to reject peace talks with Russia multiple times and continued arming it and sending it money instead, in order to prolong the war. That’s the very definition of a “proxy war.”

As far as Mr. Simicsko’s comments on religion, he’s dead-on accurate and I say that as a secular Jew. People need something bigger than themselves to live for; otherwise, they descend into a spiral of hedonism and nihilism, ripe for exploitation by governments, private corporations, and other hostile actors. That “something bigger” used to be the family, the nation, and the god/religion. You will notice that all three have been systematically, deliberately undermined and destroyed in the West over the past 40-50 years, by the usual suspects. I wonder why!

  4. Steiner if we are going to call this a proxy war then it was one that was launched by Putin against all of us in the West. Which side are you on? – Europe or Russia? Fidesz wants Europe to submit to Russian expansionism. Is that want you want? When the word “proxy” is used you better direct it at Russia which launched this and not the West which is acting to help defend sovereign Ukraine. You like that word “sovereignty” don’t you? Fidesz uses that one every day and it better apply to everyone else besides Hungary and that means Ukraine.
