Huiping Cai of China has won the third New York Franz Liszt International Piano Competition.
The young Chinese artist competed against two other pianists in the final of the contest, playing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at Carnegie Hall on Friday. After the winners were announced at the Hungarian consulate in New York, Huiping Cai said the chance to play in Carnegie Hall was the “experience of a lifetime”.
The pianist Ádám György, who established the contest and heads the jury, said the competition aimed to preserve Liszt’s musical legacy and give the composer a broader audience, while offering young artists the chance to show their talent in one of the world’s most important concert halls. The competition was supported by the Liszt Institute Hungarian Cultural Center New York. The contest is slated to take place again in 2024.
