Orbán’s opinion has changed, Hungary is ready to support Rutte’s NATO leadership bid

So far Rutte's NATO leadership bid was unacceptable to the Orbán government, now it is fully supported:

Hungary is ready to support outgoing Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s bid for NATO Secretary General after talks in Brussels earlier this week, where Rutte pledged support to a deal between Hungary and incumbent Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the country staying away from NATO’s activities in Ukraine, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on X on Tuesday.

“Following the recent European elections, where Hungarians voted in huge numbers in favour of peace, we reached an important agreement with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg,” Orbán said. “We agreed that no Hungarian personnel will take part in the activities of NATO in Ukraine and no Hungarian funds will be used to support them.”

“Our next step this week was to ensure that this agreement can stand the test of time,” the prime minister said. “After yesterday’s meeting in Brussels, PM Mark Rutte confirmed that he fully supports this deal and will continue to do so, should he become the next Secretary General of NATO,” Orbán said, adding that Rutte had also pledged “to treat all Allies with the same level of understanding and respect”.

As we wrote three weeks ago, Orbán cabinet said that anti-Hungarian Romanian President Iohannis, as NATO Secretary General candidate, supported, not Rutte. Details HERE

We wrote on Friday, PM Orbán said that “we have struck a very important and very favourable agreement” with NATO, details HERE.

  1. Rutte cannot be trusted. Rutte spent his time backstabbing Hungary. The last thing NATO needs is a politician heading an armed forces. PM. Orban, do not ever support Rutte or anything coming out of the Netherlands.

  2. Not happy. Rutte is a loser. He’s not wanted by his own people, so why should he head N.A.T.O.? Besides, he’s a globalist-socialist snake.

  3. @mariavontheresa – are you second guessing our Great Leader??? I am sure he extracted the due concessions or quid pro quos…

  4. @michaelsteiner – Mr. Rutte has been the Netherlands Prime Minister since 2010 – and still is, in an interim capacity. In fact, he is currently Europe’s second-longest serving leader.

Instead of being voted out, as you appear to insinuate, he stepped down and is leaving politics, for NATO as it now turns out. Nobody pushed him (from my Dutch friends, apparently it was quite a shock!).

Which I guess makes most European leaders, past and present … “Losers”, from your point of view?

Lastly – globalist socialist??? His party VVD are liberals – part of the Renew group in the European parliament. Which they may get kicked out of for allying themselves with Mr. Wilders PVV party, domestically.
