(MTI) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s new president, for talks in Kiev on Saturday, the prime minister’s press chief told MTI.
The talks, held after Poroshenko’s inauguration ceremony earlier in the day, focused on the situation of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, as well as Ukraine’s European integration, Bertalan Havasi said.
Ukraine’s having a European perspective is in Hungary’s interest, Havasi quoted the prime minister as saying during the talks. Orban assured Poroshenko of Hungary’s continued support for Ukraine’s European integration, Havasi added.
“It is in our national interest that all Hungary’s neighbours should become members of the EU,” Orban said.
At the meeting, Orban was given a “reassuring and encouraging” response that Ukraine would observe the rights of its ethnic Hungarian minority, Havasi said.
