Orban, Gazprom Chief Call For Speeding Up South Stream Construction

Budapest, May 14 (MTI) – Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban and Russian state gas company Gazprom chief executive Alexey Miller called for speeding up the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, Orban’s press chief said on Wednesday.

Orban and Miller held talks in Budapest, Bertalan Havasi told MTI.

The South Stream pipeline will deliver Russian gas to Europe via the Black Sea. It will bypass Ukraine, whose disputes with Moscow have interrupted gas deliveries to Europe several times in recent years.

Orban and Miller agreed that the current situation in Ukraine has proved that the gas pipeline is key from the point of view of security of gas supplies for Europe, according to Havasi.

They agreed that the construction of the pipeline must be accelerated.

Orban and Miller also discussed the new development that Austria has joined the project, Havasi said.
