Today is the International Museum Day all across the globe, and at the same time, a fun event of a similar nature is taking place in Budapest on the 18th and 19th of May, the Museum May Festival.
The 24th Museum May Festival will take place in the gardens of the Hungarian National Museum, where visitors are invited to enjoy concerts and dive deep into culture, history and science for free over this weekend.
The museum garden has been renovated recently, so it serves as the perfect venue for such a quality and educational event for people of all ages, no matter what your interests are. There will be fun jazz, swing and many other concerts on both days, while on Saturday, an ‘80s-themed street party will take place from 19:00. For this reason, the museum will be open until 22:00.
The event’s main objective is to spread awareness about the cultural importance of museums.
Over 100 museums will participate with panels at the event, from all over Hungary, representing each region, not only Budapest. The panels and presentations will be divided into seven sections. Some of the museums that you can learn more about at the event include the Holocaust Memorial Centre, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Petőfi Museum of Literature, the Hungarian National Museum, the Hungarian National History Museum, the Hungarian Museum of Sports and Olympics.
In addition, several museums from the countryside will guide you through the secrets of Hungarian rural life, history and natural features.
The colourful ensemble of museums, ranging from art all the way to science, is made complete by the presence of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library and the National Széchenyi Library.
If you wish to extend your celebratory adventure of the International Museum Day, we recommend visiting the above-mentioned museums of Budapest, and the House of Terror, the Pinball Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungarian National Gallery, the Aquincum Museum and Archeological Park or the Museum of Ethnography, depending on what you are more interested in: art, Hungarian history or something fun, like Europe’s biggest slot machine museum.
