Migrant minors allowed to stay even if asylum rejected

Budapest, August 12 (MTI) – Around 7,000 migrant minors without accompanying adults have been registered in Hungary this year, and even if they fail to meet the criteria for asylum they will not be expelled, daily Magyar Hirlap said on Wednesday.

The immigration office told the paper that end-June figures showed there were 6,529 refugee children without accompanying adults. They are placed in child protection institutions and a guardian is appointed to represent them. This applies even if they could be restored to their family or state care is available for them elsewhere.

In the case of underage asylum seekers with a family, the procedure is the same as for adults. They are placed in a reception centre with the family and the immigration office provides them with food, shelter and health services. Children receive five daily meals and also the opportunity to receive basic education.
