Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, mentioned Hungary as well at his Congress Hearing. According to him, there were several fake profiles deleted before the Hungarian election, as index.hu and napi.hu reported.
The hearing
According to local Hungarian time, Mark Zuckerberg’s Congress Hearing took place on Tuesday evening. The reason for Mark Zuckerberg’s hearing was that unauthorised personnel could have access to millions of Facebook profiles even before the 2016 American election. Therefore, the American Senate questioned the CEO.
Fake profiles and elections
Zuckerberg admitted him being responsible for the misuse of data. However, he highlighted that
his team has been working on artificial intelligence that can detect fake profiles. There were thousands of Facebook accounts deleted before the Mexican, Brasilian, Pakistani, and Hungarian elections.
He listed the elections coming this year and stated that the profiles of those countries’ will be observed so that no misuse can happen. Mistakenly, he also listed Hungary. It seems like his information was not up-to-date since the Hungarian election has ended on Sunday, the 8th of April.
As bbc.com also reports, it turned out that Cambridge Analytica had unauthorised access to the personal data of ten million people, including
about 32,000 Hungarian accounts.
Furthermore, it also used the data for political purposes. However, there is no connection between the data being misused and the fake profiles deleted before.
Are you involved?
You can also check out if you were involved in the scandal because Facebook indicates it in your Facebook profile.
It is now possible to browse through the applications one uses and the data one shares with these. This also includes applications used in the past but deleted after a while. Facebook notifies those who used the This is Your Digital Life application or shared their Facebook data with Cambridge Analytica: they can get more information on whether their data could have been misused.
