Hungary in complete agreement with Germany on Russian embargo, official says

Berlin, January 18 (MTI) – Hungary and Germany fully agree on the matter of the embargo ordered by Russia, ministerial commissioner for measures related to the embargo on European Union farm products Gyula Budai told MTI in Berlin on Sunday.

Both countries are interested in finding a peaceful solution as soon as possible to the Ukrainian-Russian crisis so that their exporters can return to the Russian market, he added.

Speaking after talks with head of the Bundestag’s farm committee Gitta Connemann and parliamentary state secretary of Germany’s farm ministry Peter Bleser, Budai said agreement on these matters is important to Hungary because Germany “is our most important ally” as well as a “leading European power” in farming.

Budai noted that the Hungarian government had held the position from the outset that companies “must already prepare for the times following the embargo”.

The Russian embargo imposed on EU farm products for a year last August brought about a 30 percent fall in Hungarian agricultural exports to Russia and caused a loss of 80 million euros to Hungary.
