Hungarian set decorator of Poor Things may win the Oscar!

Hungarian set decorator can win the Academy Award for Best Production Design in 2024 #setdecorator #AcademyAward #Oscar #PoorThings

Poor Things was made in Hungary and was nominated for the Academy Award in 11 categories, including the Academy Award for Best Production Design. Thus, Zsuzsa Mihalek may be awarded the Oscar at this year’s gala.

According to origo.hu, many movie journals wrote that Mihalek had a good chance to win it. Thus, Hungary could have an Oscar even in 2024. In 2022, another Hungarian set decorator, Zsuzsnna (Zsuzsi) Sipos, won the Academy Award for Best Production Design for Dune. We wrote about her and her success in THIS article. Dune was also shot in Hungary.

The 96th Oscar Gala will take place on 10 March. Poor Things received nominations in 11 categories. As a result, it has the second most nominations following Oppenheimer’s 13.

Zsuzsa Mihalek, James Price and Shona Heath worked as the set decorators of the movie.

Experts believe that the Oscar will go either to Poor Things or Barbie. Both are feminist productions set in an unreal visual world.

For example, Variety, one of the most popular American movie magazines, Variety, gave the Oscar for the Poor Things. They believe the movie may win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

IndieWire thinks the American Film Academy will consider Poor Things’ visual bravery. Screen Rant thinks the competition will be sharp between Barbie and Poor Things, but the complex scenery of the latter may convince the decision-makers. Vanity Fair calculates a similar scenario.

That means the entire American media already gave the Oscar to the partly Hungarians-made Poor Things. We shall see. Until then, here is the trailer of the movie:
