Military intervention in Syria should be avoided if at all possible since it could cause serious problems, MFA Parliamentary State Secretary Zsolt Németh declared before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian Parliament on 11 September 2013. László Kovács (MSZP) and Márton Gyöngyösi (Jobbik) also commented the Syria conlfict.
Zsolt Németh (Fidesz) stated that Syria’s religious and ethnic problems could only be resolved through finding a political solution. He also said that the international community should find a way to prevent the use of chemical weapons in the future. It is good news that the role of the UN has become more prominent over the past couple of days; the investigation of the UN inspectors in Syria shows that, and their report on the chemical attack may already be available by the end of this week – Zsolt Németh added. The Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that in the near future an agreement could be proposed about obliging Syria to destroy its entire stock of chemical weapons and to join the international convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons. Mr. Németh said that the Syrian crisis was in the focus of Hungarian diplomacy and Hungary’s approach had been „fast and proactive”.
László Kovács, the socialist Vice-chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee said that Hungary had given a timely and appropriate response; György Csóti, a Fidesz member of the Committee, said that Hungarian diplomacy was handling the issue in a „restrained and intelligent” way.
Márton Gyöngyösi, deputy leader of Jobbik’s Parliamentary Group said Jobbik disowns the provocation as well as the anti-Assad stance of the West and the servile attitude of the Hungarian government that runs to rally behind its Western allies. Jobbik also objects to the support provided for the forces being organized against the Assad government which also represent Islam’s most extreme platforms, Wahhabism and Salafism and openly cooperate with Al-Qaeda and other terrorist organisations. Not only does the West contradict itself by supporting terrorism, but subordinates the already fragile stability of tension-ridden Middle East to its own short-term goals Gyöngyösi added.
