Hungarian army starts building new section of border fence – Photos

Budapest, August 3 (MTI) – Construction of a new section of the temporary barrier on Hungary’s border with Serbia began on Monday morning.

The new section is near the border crossing of Asotthalom in Hungary and Kiralyhalom (Backi Vinogradi) in Serbia, MTI’s local correspondent said.

The army has begun putting steel posts into the ground on an area where earth was levelled last week. The new section of the fence will use the technology from a “sample section” built earlier, which includes NATO-standard wiring.

Preparations for further sections of the fence have begun near the border crossings of Tiszasziget and Roszke, on the Hungarian side, local mayors told MTI.

Another section is being prepared near Kelebia, also a crossing point on the Hungarian side of the border, the local correspondent said.

Government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said earlier that an additional 22.2 billion forints (EUR 71.8m) would be added to the 6.5 billion forints already earmarked for building the fence and for setting up temporary reception centres in the country.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at an event in late July that the deadline for the fence’s completion has been brought forward to August 31. He said the government expects illegal entries to drop to a sixth or seventh of their current numbers thereafter.
