Index.hu writes that a 40-year-old Hungarian hobby alpinist died on Monday in the Italian Alps, as he was crushed by 10 cubic metre stones while climbing the southern apex of the Aiguille Noire de Peuterey.

One of the employees of Index, András Földes, was actually a friend of Attila Gyetvai, the late architect, and decided to get into touch with a 33-year-old Scottish alpinist who was bound to Gyetvai when he died.

The Scottish man recalled that Gyetvai was accelerating confidently to the top, when at 12:56 he heard the coming of a huge cliff falling. At this time, the Hungarian man was already out of the Scot’s sight; he only heard the cliffs, the shouts of Gyetvai and then 5-10 cubic metre of rocks appeared along with Gyetvai.

He continues by saying that the rope tightened suddenly, but no sounds were coming from Gyetvai, and the Scottish climber assumed that the Hungarian man was beaten against the stone wall and has fainted.

‘Then I felt the rope becoming loose and I realised that it was cut by the cliffs and Gyetvai disappeared somewhere’

– recalls the Scottish man, who called the mountain rescuers immediately.

Földes argues that, based on what the police has gathered and what the Scottish climber described, the accident was caused by uncertain circumstances and not by human neglect.

Heti Világgazdaság reports the findings of the Italian police based on an article written by an Italian news outlet, ANSA. According to this, the Hungarian man was in front and has lost his balance due to the falling rocks, then the rope tightened and was cut by the rocks. Thus Gyetvai fell into the abyss which is several hundreds of metres in depth.
