At the moment, there are two plans about the railway line to Budapest Airport that could be realised. One is about a possible route from Nyugati Railway Station, the other would take passengers from Keleti Railway Station to the airport.
According to Turizmus, the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) support both of the plans from a professional point of view. Róbert Homolya, the chairman and managing director of the railway company, was the one to answer questions about the plans to connect downtown Budapest to Franz Liszt International Airport. According to Homolya, it is up to the government which route is actually realised. The decision also affects the future of the two main railway stations of the capital.
According to Homolya, the government plans to make the environmentally friendly railway the base of the capital’s public transport.
One of the key components of this is establishing a railway line that would ensure a connection to the airport’s Terminal 2. The MÁV Group agrees that establishing a railway line would be of key importance.
One of the plans includes the Kőbánya-Kispest Station, which is directly connected to Nyugati Railway Station. At Kőbánya-Kispest station, a detour line would be added heading to the airport, which would then be reconnected to the main line in Monor.
The plans for this line have already been completed, and securing the necessary permits is now underway as well.
MÁV also suggests establishing a direct connection between Kőbánya-Kispest and Keleti Railway Station. Trains would leave every 15 minutes, which means that people could get to the airport from Keleti in just 20 minutes.
The plans about the connection between Nyugati Railway Station and Budapest Airport were revealed back in 2016. Since then, theories surfaced about the possibility of a Chinese company getting behind the construction works. On the other hand, some question whether the railway line will ever be actually built.
