French smishing scammer arrested in Budapest, he sent 35,000 fraudulent texts daily

A French national has been arrested on suspicion of obtaining personal data and bank card details by sending fraudulent text messages (smishing) to victims on behalf of the police, the police headquarters of Somogy County said on police.hu on Monday.

French smishing scammer arrested

The 29-year-old man was arrested by a rapid response unit of Somogy County police in a Budapest cafe on Thursday.

The suspect was taken to Kaposvár, in south-western Hungary, for a hearing while the authorities seized several mobile phones, SIM cards and cash from the man.

An investigation has so far shown that there were instances when the man sent up to 35,000 fraudulent text messages on the same day.
