EP Elections – Orban Hopes For At Least Average Voter Turnout

Budapest, May 25 (MTI) – Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he hoped that voter participation rate in the European parliamentary election in Hungary would at least reach the average for the European Union, speaking after casting his own ballot a little after noon on Sunday.

“I would not like an unworthy picture of Hungary to be seen in terms of its European commitment, although voter participation rate demonstrates this,” Orban said after voting in Budapest with his wife, Aniko Levai.

He said the latest data that put the participation rate two percentage points under that in the previous EP election five years earlier was still within the limit of tolerability. He added that Hungarians were of the type that leave things to the last minute and could turn out in bigger numbers in the afternoon.

Orban encouraged Hungarians to go out and vote and not to “take the matter lightly”. It does make a difference who represents the country in the EU in the coming years, he said.
