Green opposition party LMP believes that the importance of protecting nature and the environment has been belittled under the Fidesz government, an LMP MP said at a press conference in Budapest on Monday.
Behind the favourable macroeconomic indicators seen in recent years are serious structural problems that will not allow the Hungarian economy to develop in a sustainable manner in the long term, said Erzsébet Schmuck.
Fidesz’s policy serves short-term economic interests, while, for example, failing to take into account peoples’ right to a healthy environment, she added.
If LMP ends up in government, it will re-establish an independent ministry of environmental protection, strengthen the legal scope of the environmental protection authority and improve the conditions for the operation of Hungary’s national parks, Schmuck said.

LMP wants to work in partnership with civil organisations involved with protecting nature and the environment, it wants to build up green spaces in communities, protect trees and prevent the sanctioned disregard of environmental issues in cases of investments of priority importance to the national economy, she added.
