A 41-year-old Austrian man hit a policeman in Sopron, a Hungarian city located near the Austrian border, on Monday. The perpetrator fled, but the Austrian police arrested him at dawn on Tuesday.

According to Index, the police stopped the driver in Móricz Zsigmond Street in the city centre of Sopron around 21:30 on Monday. The breath test produced a positive result, and when the officers wanted to take the man to the police station for further testing, he drove off. The police followed him with several cars. The driver was stopped at an intersection of Csengery és Csatkai Street after he was forced to slow down due to traffic reasons.

One of the police officers got out of the car to take the driver into custody, but the man backed up the car, then suddenly changed direction and hit the policeman walking towards him. The injured officer was taken to the hospital.

Another policeman tried to shoot the tire to protect his colleague, but the perpetrator drove away. The Hungarian authorities issued an international arrest warrant against the driver. The Austrian authorities found and arrested the man around 01:00 a.m. on Tuesday and took him to the Schattendorf police station.

The Sopron Police Headquarters initiated proceedings based on reasonable suspicion of committing a crime against an official.
