Budapest, March 5 (MTI) – Hungary’s chief veterinary officer has ordered the disinfection of lorries and other vehicles at Ukraine’s border with Hungary as a precaution against the African swine fever virus entering the country, the national food chain safety office (Nebih) said.
Lorries will have to pass through a disinfection gate while cars will receive a disinfectant treatment of their wheels at the border crossings of Zahony, Beregsurany, Tiszabecs, Lonya and Barabas, Nebih said in a statement on Wednesday. Personal belongings and luggage will be more thoroughly checked at entry to reduce the risks of bringing in the virus with, for example, smoked meat.
The virus does not infect humans but it is highly contagious and a serious threat to animals, the statement said.
