Where to eat the best fish in Budapest?

There are lots of restaurants in #Budapest to get to know the #Hungarian #fish cuisine #Hungary #food

Fish is of key importance in the Hungarian cuisine, take for example the Fisherman’s soup. Whether you are craving for fish prepared with a Hungarian twist or special fish meals, Funzine has some great advice on where to head in Budapest.

Aranyhal Restaurant

Here: 1145 Budapest, Thököly út 121
Open: Mon-Sat: 11:30-22:00, Sun: 11:30-21:00

The Aranyhal (Hungarian for ‘goldfish’) restaurant has learnt a few tricks over the four decades since it was opened, a testimony to this is the cosy décor: the checkered tablecloth, the brick walls, the wooden elements together make you feel like you are on the calm, peaceful countryside. You will surely drool all over the menu, especially when you learn that they have two-course daily menus for just 1190 forints. Head over there for a salmon steak, fish greaves, silurus paprikás, or a hearty fish plate (with grilled salmon, silurus, zander and carp).

Tó Bisztró

Here: 2131 Göd, Bartók Béla utca 6.
Open: all days: 12:00-0:00

Tó Bisztró is not quite in Budapest, but only a 30 minutes drive away from the capital city, at Göd. Thanks to the bright and blue interior design, you will feel like you are at the seaside, but still in contact with the Hungarian cuisine. The list of the things you should try is endless, but Funzine’s recommendations include the traditional Hungarian bread and dripping, the trout, the fried catfish jaw and the king crab á la pil-pil. A two-course menu costs 1190 forints (available between noon and 3 pm), but you can complete your meal with a dessert for just 300 forints.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, then Buddha-Bar Budapest will win your heart with their Asian fusion kitchen. As we have written previously, this restaurant serves unique sushi plates and new-wave tataki sashimi (with tuna, salmon or scallops). Their summer menu melts our hearts, just consider eating salmon with mashed peppers, green asparagus and teriyaki sauce, or spicy tuna taco with Mediterranean spices, chilli and coriander.

Wan Hao

Here: 1107 Budapest, Jegenye utca 30.
Open: all days: 10:00-22:00

Wan Hao is primarily known for their authentic dim sums and specialities from Canton. Their most popular meal is the simmered fish in spicy soy sauce, which is the key dish in traditional Canton cuisine, usually prepared from mandarin fish, bass or turbot, filled with herbs, chilli and ginger. The best thing about Wan Hao is that in the summer season, the restaurant organises outdoors Chinese grill parties regularly.

Bubba’s Downtown

Here: 1056 Budapest, Papnövelde u. 10.
Open: Sun-Thu: 11:00-22:00, Fri-Sat: 11:00-23:00

Aside from the traditional Hungarian meals, excellent local wines, craft beers, Bubba’s Downtown is worth a trip for their fish meals representing all regions of the world. Their most popular dish is the fish & chips, but they have tasty, unusual meals like the black clam from Trieste, the king crab wrapped in bacon or the Canadian lobster. Funzine also recommends the salmon or catfish burger with a lemonade.

Open: Sun-Wen: 11:00-00:00, Thu-Sat: 11:00-02:00

STÉG gets the fish for their dishes from the regions along the river Tisza, which is the second longest river in Hungary. You can try the best fishes from the Tisza, for example, the catfish, carp, cod, or chub. Their menu is mostly Hungarian, aside from the fish they serve one of the best lángos in Budapest with sour cream and cheese. Though they have fine desserts too, like the waffle with lots of foam, you should start with the fish. After all, their motto says “eat well, eat fish”.
