Santiago de Compostela (MTI) – Minister of Human Resources Zoltan Balog took over the World Music Expo (Womex) baton from Santiago de Compostela late on Friday because Budapest will host the event next October.
“The Womex has never been held in east-central Europe, so Budapest becoming a host city has great significance because an entire region will get the chance to present itself. The Carpathian Basin has an extremely rich and diverse folk music tradition and Womex will give us a chance to present archaic and authentic music by 13 ethnic minorities living in Hungary, including the Roma, as well as Balkan world music,” Balog said in the Galician city which hosts the 2014 event.
He added that he expected musicians to perform at the Budapest expo also from neighbouring Ukraine, including Ukrainians, Rusyns, Hungarians and Slavs.
Budapest will host the 2015 Womex between October 21 and 25.
