Hungary Lodges Intervention Plea In Lomnici Versus EP Case

Budapest, April 30 (MTI) – In the dispute between Zoltan Lomnici and the European Parliament concerning the Slovak citizenship of ethnic Hungarians, Hungary has lodged an intervention plea with the European Court of Justice, the state secretariat for Hungarian communities abroad said in a statement today.

Lomnici, chairman of the Council of Human Dignity, turned with a petition lodged with the European Parliament’s petition committee in 2012 against the Slovak law which strips an applicant of another country’s citizenship of his or her Slovak papers.

After considering the petition for several months, the committee closed the case. It is this decision that Lomnici objected to and brought before the Luxembourg court.

The state secretariat said based on the court’s legal practice, it could be established that the petition committee’s procedure was illegal. Slovakia has also lodged an intervention plea in the case, the state secretariat noted.
