Despite the Delta variant of Covid-19, people are travelling abroad. 18% of Hungarians are spending their vacation in a foreign country.
Earlier in July, PM Viktor Orbán announced the further ease of restrictions. This resulted in a 27% increase in the number of vacation reservations. According to Forbes, the majority of people are spending their vacation in Hungary, but 18% are planning to travel abroad. Based on their article, the most popular foreign travel destinations are Croatia, Turkey, Greece, and Montenegro.
More recent information shows that the trend has changed just a little bit. Now, Hungarians are travelling mainly to Turkey, Greece, Croatia, and Italy. Recently, there has been an interest in travelling to the Maldives and Seychelles.
Barna Tarnóczi, the director of sales at Tensi Holiday, told portfolio.hu that people are avoiding group trips and cruises. Visitors who go to Spain or Portugal are focusing on safe travel; therefore, they rent cars and choose apartments as their accommodation. The portal also writes that it is common for many tourists to seek travel insurance due to rapidly changing coronavirus regulations and to ask travel agents to book flights and accommodation.
“People are careful, which is why many of them ask travel agents to book the accommodation in smaller hotels where they can meet fewer people and the hotel has spacious gardens. These types of trips are booked to Turkey, for example,” said Barna Tarnóczi.
Those who prefer group trips choose Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Tunisia, and Italy, but Croatia and Slovenia also remain popular destinations among Hungarian tourists. A newly preferred location is the Maldives or Seychelles due to the fact that these travel destinations opened first, and visitors are convinced that proper safety measures are taken. The United States is closed for tourists, and the Middle East does not have many tourists either. City breaks and cruises will likely be chosen by tourists later, probably only in the fall.
“There is no decline due to the Delta variant of the coronavirus in terms of bookings, but most of the offices are operating at a third of their capacity of 2019,” said Judit Molnár, the president of the Association of Hungarian Travel Agencies.
The prices have gone up at many destinations, but people prefer high-quality services even if it means higher prices. Unfortunately, many people left the catering and hospitality industries, and the vast majority does not seem to want to return to their previous jobs. At certain hotels, even salespeople have to take up cleaning chores.
