They initiated the legal procedure due to the International Swimming Federation’s prohibition threat to sanction every swimmer who takes part in the competition of the International Swimming League.
Three professional swimmers, namely Katinka Hosszú, Tom Shields and Michael Andrew file a lawsuit against FINA, reports 24.hu, referring to the Swimming World Magazine. The reason behind this is that FINA threatened all swimmers who wanted to take part in the new competition of ISL on 18th December in Turin. The event has been cancelled in the end.
They think that the threat was infringing, that is why they sued FINA; at the same time, ISL did so as well. As we reported earlier, ISL is a new association founded by swimmers, but FINA does not recognise it.
“My passion has always been to push swimming in the direction where swimmers are partners of the governing body, not just muppets. ISL takes swimmers seriously, not like FINA.”
– Katinka said. Some elite swimmers back up the lawsuit: Katinka is a
three times Olympic champion, 7 times world champion on 50m and 13 times world champion on 25m,
Shields is an Olympic and world champion as a member of the US relay team, while Andrew is a world champion on 25m. Olympic gold medalists Cate Campbell and Adam Peaty shared their opinion as well.
