Minister of State Heading the Prime Minister’s Office János Lázár delivered a speech at a commemorative event organised by the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice and the National Heritage Institute to mark the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
At the 1956 Memorial at the University of Technology, which was erected to commemorate the fact that the revolution began as a student demonstration, the Minister of State stressed that the 60th anniversary of the revolution is approaching and still much remains to be done in moral, legal and political terms so that the commemoration will be worthy of Hungary’s most noble historical traditions.
He also noted that Béla Biszku, one of the leaders of the communist reprisals following the 1956 Revolution, is soon to stand trial. The proceedings are symbolic as he is the first and last living politician of the 1956 Communist dictatorship to face criminal inquiry.
Former Prime Minister Péter Boross was also present at the event and paid homage to those convicted and executed between 1945 and 1956 as well as to those persecuted after the Revolution.
On 22 October, commemorations will continue at the University of Technology, after which a procession organised by the Rákóczi Association will take place along the historical route of 1956 demonstrations, including Clark Adam Square and Bem József Square.
On 23 October, the date on which the declaration of the Republic of Hungary is also celebrated, the national flag will be hoisted ceremoniously at Heroes’ Square, where in the afternoon Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will hold a speech.
